We're Warwick's Gothic and Horror Society! We started as a reading group within the English department, but are now branching out and are hoping to provide a space for everyone to engage in whatever spooky media interests them! We pride ourselves on being a friendly and welcoming environment to all, so regardless of how familiar you are with the Gothic or Horror, we would love to have you at an event! Members of exec are always around to answer any questions you might have, so if you want to try something new, there's always someone to fall back on. If you'd like to keep up to date with the society or chat with some friendly folks, you can join our discord by clicking the link below!
We have about four events per month, and they will typically be some combination of the things listed below.
Every other week we host this event! Here we will be reading short gothic or horror stories. This is our most common event and one of our most accessible. All texts read in this group will be around 20 pages and should be fairly approachable. Additionally, all texts will be free to read and provided to you by the society! Examples of authors read in the past are Shirley Jackson, Edgar Allen Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Charlotte Bronte.
This group meets a few times per term to discuss a gothic/horror text that is a bit longer, and potentially a bit more challenging than what the Short Story Reading Group focuses on. While this group does go into longer texts, the meetings are more spread out than the other reading group, meaning, you will still have very little to read per week if you wish to join. This term we will be diving into The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux!
Once a month, we will get together to watch a horror film! This group will watch both classic and modern horror films and is more than happy to take suggestions from society members. We are still finalising our movies for this year, but they will include Get Out (2017), directed by Jordan Peele, and Coraline (2009), directed by Henry Selick!
