The University of Warwick’s campus is home to several annual conferences. Somehow, amidst the oversaturation of day-long events that promise to enrich your mind and capture your imagination, one inevitably stands out year after year. TEDxWarwick is one of the most diverse, inclusive, and versatile conferences that the university has to offer, providing a range of ideas far-reaching beyond a single discipline or interest.
2022’s event, “Checkmate" (our 13th flagship event), served as a humbling reminder that the enormous conference we put together began as a series of talks held in cramped lecture theatres. The Executive team that once numbered under a dozen now consists of well over 50 students, all of whom worked together tirelessly throughout the year to put together four fantastic events (our alumni salon "Press Play", sustainability conference TEDxCountdown, student salon "Horizon", and most notably the main Conference "Checkmate"). Checkmate brought 13 speakers from around the world to a packed Oculus to speak on topics ranging from diversity in media and mental health to sustainable finance and animal rights.
TEDxWarwick stands out as a diverse event. Despite our name, we look to reach beyond the confines of the Warwick community. This is no simple university event, it is a regional and national landmark, which is why we were featured by Coventry 2021 as a flagship event.
We work hard to make sure our conference is available to as many people as possible. This doesn’t just include handing out flyers in Birmingham on freezing Saturday mornings in February, it involves making sure our event is as affordable as we can possibly make it. We offered tickets as cheap as £12 for our 2022 flagship event, marking it out as one of the cheapest events of its kind. TEDxWarwick also does its very best to highlight the incredible amount of talent and initiative that calls this University home. We partner with a number of societies and departments, including Warwick Business School and Warwick Law Society. We had several performances during our 2022 conference, ranging from PPE student and musician Odd Tropic to Warwick’s Classical & Modern Dance Society. This conference didn’t just display the thinking of 13 visionaries, it showed all of the best Warwick has to offer.
What makes TEDxWarwick such an enjoyable event to organise and attend is that we don’t tailor our event to anyone in particular. We cater to everyone, and this is reflected by our diverse audience, all of whom leave our events with a sense of curiosity and inspiration.
